Global policy review to identify links between climate change and antimicrobial resistance

  02 March 2026

The review examines evidence connecting climate change with antimicrobial resistance (AMR), showing that rising temperatures, extreme weather events, and environmental disruption can accelerate the spread of resistant pathogens and resistance genes through impacts on human health, animal populations, water and soil systems, and healthcare infrastructures; the authors highlight that climate-driven shifts in disease patterns, increased antibiotic use during climate-related disasters, and weakened public health capacity could worsen AMR, underscoring the need for integrated policies that address both climate mitigation and antimicrobial stewardship to curb the growing threat.
